The extender should be placed in a location with a strong enough signal. I was unable to place it near the edge of my router's range as I intended. It had to be placed in a location closer to the router where I had always had a strong signal. The wifi extender has an indicator light which aids in the choice of locations. I wanted to extend my router's range by approximately 40 feet and this extender did so with some room to spare.
