• Horizontal outlets should not make much difference. Just make sure you have a strong signal on the unit.

• I suspect the antennae are omni-directional so the orientation of the unit shouldn't make a difference. I do have to say though that since I installed this, my main desktop that is about 8 feet and one wall away from my router, has started repeatedly dropping its I-net connection. Don't understand why but this never occurred before.
