They have download gameplay which you can play between 3ds with just one cartiledge. Like Luigi mansion. However many games require each play to have there own. Like super MARIO Bros 2. So not all games work that way. Before you make a game purchase the back of the case has info on its comparability.

A few games allow cooperative gameplay with only one cartridge via the linking feature of the 2DS - you would have to check for the game individually.
