It cools rather quickly, depending on room or ambient temperature. The cooler the outside temperature, the quicker it will cool down inside. Within an hour you should reach refrigerator temps. Give the freezer just a few more hours before putting ice cream in. If keeping it in an area prone to excessive heat, covering with an insulating blanket of some sort helps keep it cooler inside. Also, the compressor motor is very quiet.
