Its always on and is either picture in picture or full screen when you tap on the small picture. There are no guide or alignment lines. Its just a live image of what the camera is seeing.

Please try again later.No it doesn't not like the ones built into the car,it will record going backwards,it's only a 2" screen on the camera,no back up lines either,if you are looking for a back up camera best buy sells those.THE NextBase camera to me has the best quality pictures,I have 35% tint on the rear window andwhen I play it back the picture quality is great.

Depending upon where you place the camera, you will have a full view of what is directly behind and to the left and right of you.
