Is this compatible with the d5100? null

No, the Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera is not compatible with the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED Lens. The D5100 is not compatible with the new Electromagnetic Focus System found in AF-P lenses. The D5100 is compatible with AF-S, G and D type lenses.

It should be comparable. Your Nikon should have an adapter on the bottom that will attach to it. Works with my d3300
