This is a very good lens for portraits/photoshoots. On a crop sensor body (DX cameras) there is a crop factor is 1.5, so this 35mm lens performs similar to how a 50mm lens performs on a full body (FX cameras). I am using this lens with the D3300 and it's a joy to shoot with. This is a good multipurpose lens (portraits, street photography, landscape, etc.). Very crisp.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.you could, but you have to get fairly close, and when you do, you cropped out a lot. Its best for up close stuff and fast close action. If you can save the money, get a Tokina 100mm f/2.8, you'll loose AF on a 3100 but gain one of the sharpest lenses ever made for Nikons and killer bokeh, and they are under 500 bucks. You shouldn't need AF for portrait and photo shoots anyways.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The right selection for a lens will depend a lot on the type of photography that you are interesting. Some photographers look for faster lenses (large aperture ex. F/2.8), wide angle, Telephoto, Macro or zoom lenses.
