The D5100, because of it's more compact size, does not have an internal focus motor. It requires lenses that have their own built-in focus motor in order to obtain autofocus. Nikon denotes these type of lenses with an "AF-S". This means that the lens contains Nikon's Silent Wave Focus Motor. The AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED does have an internal focus motor. You will be able to use it on the D5100 with autofocus. It is 100% compatible.
