Quick answer: Yes. To help you know for the future: The D5000,5100,5200, 3000, 3100, 3200, etc... lines of camera have no internal lens motors, so they will not focus the non-AF-I/AF-S lenses. (Example I have an old Nikon AF 300mm f/2.8 that I just LOVE. All of my cameras have lens motors, so it will autofocus for me. My friend that I go out with to shoot sometimes has a Nikon D3200. Just like your D5100, there is no lens motor in it, so while she CAN use it, it operates as MANUAL focus only. (She can still take gorgeous photos with it though!) So - As general rules: * ANY lens that you see that has AF-S, AF-I, (Nikon) or HSM, (Sigma) or "internal silent focusing motor " (Tokina) should work just fine autofocusing on your camera. * Lenses that are made for "DX" cameras will provide the field of view listed. (18-55mm DX lens will look like 18-55mm) Lenses made for FX or Full-Frame or "35mm FILM" cameras will have their advertised field of view multiplied by a crop-factor of 1.5. (Nikon AF-S 50mm lens will look like 75mm on your camera.) the NON-DX 35mm f/1.4 times 1.5 = 52.5mm, 200mm times 1.5 = 300mm, etc... This gets advantageous for you when you WANT to make far away things LOOK like they are closer. On my D700 & D800 (Excellent cameras!) my 600mm LOOKS like 600mm. But on my D300s or D7100 my 600mm LOOKS like what I would see with a 900mm on my D700 & D800! So for my bird photography, though I love the results I get from my full-frame cameras, unless I am reasonably sure that I am going to get close enough to all the birds I still use my D300s or D7100 so that the birds seem closer! :-)
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This will auto focus with the D5100. One thing to keep in mind is that if you stop the lens down past f5.6 you wont be able to use the EVF on the D5100. One more point of interest is that because this is made for FX size sensors, the DX sensor on the D5100 will produce more unwanted effects than would be produced on a FX body. If you plan to get a full frame sensor camera then this is not a bad way to build your lens collection but you can get a DX 50mm lens for much less money and really you would only need a 35mm lens because of the crop factor. Hope this helps.
