D lenses have an aperture ring on it. G lenses do not so you can adjust the aperture with the dial on the camera instead of on the lens as with the D types.

Additionally, the 1.8g (as do all Nikon G lenses) removes the external aperture dial for an internal camera controlled one, meaning that you cannot manually adjust the aperture on the G lens. This is only particularly relevant when shooting video in live view, as the camera cannot adjust the aperture at that time. Lastly, the 9 bladed aperture design produces a somewhat smoother Bokeh.
