Yes. Don't open the flash and have the camera do the rest on the selected program mode.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you don't manually open the flash, you won't have flash.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Not sure how 9700 works but this 9900 model has a manual slide release button for the flash so it never pops up automatically. The camera tells you when it thinks you should use the flash but you can just ignore it and take the photo without - in any mode. Side note: this flash pops up on a spring rigging and is more "delicate" in appearance than my old 9300. Again, I'm not familiar with the 9700 so this could be very different if 9700 was also a solid rectangle piece that raised slightly.

Without the flash up, the resolution is hampered because it tries to slow down the shutter speed of the camera, and the possibility of getting blurred phots are greater.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can disable the flash in the Auto and in P S A M modes on both the COOLPIX S9700 and the new COOLPIX S9900. Neither cameras allow you to manage flash in Easy Auto Mode, which is a different setting from Auto Mode. Please check the COOLPIX S9700 Reference Manual for information on managing flash modes, or contact Nikon Support for further assistance.
