It doesn't appear to have any insulation, so the outside can get hot. When I first got it, I turned it on outside for 20 minutes at the highest temperature to burn off manufacturing residues (which I could smell). Now we only smell the food as long as we keep it clean. Ideally, you need to clean it after every use or you'll get a buildup or stuff that will smoke. I'm sure the temperature at which you cook at could make difference in the amount of fumes. We're finally able to sear food with this without setting off the smoke detectors.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It gets a little hot on the outside. I wouldn't put anything too close or on top of it while it's cooking. If you follow the manual, it says to wash all the accessories with soap and water then put them in and set it to airfry at 450 for 30 minutes (some say 20). This burns off any chemical residue from the factory. I haven't had a problem with smoke or strong smells since I did that.
