You can play the games offline if you don’t have this, but if you would like to play them online with other people around the world, you’ll need to get this membership.

Its like the x-box online lets you do. Except for the switch online pass is way cheaper than x-box. But the switch online also gives you access to more games that you can play because you have the membership.

However, you will likely not be able to play online with other people for some games that do require a Nintendo Online membership. The card is just a physical object for Nintendo to place the activation code and to sell in stores. You can also just purchase the membership online on the Switch.

Purchasing the membership ,also gives you access to the Nintendo eshop where you can download games directly to the switch system and sometimes they offer free games.
