Sure, this device could very well serve as a back-up/emergency phone as it performs the basic functions of calling and texting, and then some ;) It can most definitely be used with a pre-paid service, all you have to do is purchase the device and take it to the carrier/purchase a SIM to get connected. I can confirm that this works fine as a backup phone with AT&T. I bought it for that. I just put in my sim card and it works fine. Haven't really used it other than to play Snake but the phone works and I had no problems with it the few days I was testing it out

Yes. It can be used as a spare if you have another SIM card to use it with. 
I think you can buy those bring your own phone SIM cards and use it with this phone. They give you a phone number

Absolutely! You can use it however you please since it an unlock phone, as long as you use a carrier that supports GSM signal such as AT&T and T-Mobile. Just buy a SIM card from them and insert in your phone and off you go.

I am using this as a pre-paid phone because I prefer to do it that way. I have always used T-Mobile and I believe some other providers do pre-paid as well.

Yes, but you would need to not use the same phone number. If you are currently using a contract phone you could only use this phone as a pre-paid with a separate, pre-paid phone card SIM that would not support your current number.
