No, you don't have to use iFit to use the machine. You can just row on your own...or we have been watching YouTube on the tablet to follow rowing instructors there. It's just a normal tablet, you can use for surfing web etc. When you do connect the iFit app to the rower though it controls the tension settings for you which is pretty nice.
