If you get the pro model. The base model doesn't have any USB ports, only a micro SD slot.

The Nvidia Shield, which is the cylinder, does not have any USB ports. You can add storage via the SD card slot. The Shield Pro, which resembles the previous generations, comes with USB ports.

You can use external on Shield pro. Not Shield TV (the barrel)

There is no USB port on the Shield. You can connect to a NAS through the network, however. The user manual details enabling network discovery through the settings menu.
