“curious about gaming.... do you need a computer connected to this to game or can you "stream" games from steam or a like service? if so, is a subscription required or do you just purchase the game you want?”

I don't game myself but I have family members that do. Yes you can connect to Steam with this console. You do not need to connect a computer for any gaming or streaming. It is powerful to run most of the new games. (I don't know of any it can't run but once again, I'm not a gamer) As far as Steam it is whatever Steam charges. NVidia Sheild just connects you to the service. Hope this helps.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Both. If you have a GeForce PC connected to the same network, you can stream your games directly from that. If you don't but still have a good internet connection, you can purchase games from the free GeForce Now service included with the console. However, the games will cost as much as their marketplaces are selling them. So a brand new AAA title will still probably cost $60, but it's a one time purchase and you get to keep the games on your PC
