“I can't seem to find a clear answer.. does this support 5.1 Surround? I'm planning to plug it into a 5.1 receiver via HDMI, to replace an old Apple TV, and the specs for the 500gb version show support, but this 16gb doesn't say anything.”

Yes, it does support 5.1 surround sound via HDMI.

If your receiver supports it, it will also pass through full Dolby Atmos while playing media files using the Kodi app. None of the other streaming boxes can do that.

However, many TVs don’t support EAC3 pass-through (only AC3). You will get Netflix 5.1 if your TV or your receiver supports EAC3. Here are the valid HDMI routing options for Netflix 5.1 surround sound: 1) SHIELD > Receiver > TV In this configuration, the TV does not have to support EAC3 pass-through. However, your receiver needs to support EAC3 decode – most do. 2) SHIELD > TV In this configuration, the TV will need to support EAC3 pass-through or EAC3 decode via its HDMI input port.

Hopefully, the tv you are plugging it into can support the codecs. sometimes, you have to change settings... especially, on samsung tvs (bitstream and dts or dd out).
