“What does "Selective Focus" mean? Is it possible for me to determine which object I am photographing is in focus? I like my manual camera because I can choose to focus on something up-close or at a distance. One reason I have avoided automatic cameras is precisely because I can't choose the object of my focus. Does selective focus act such that I could, without moving the camera, take a picture of a bird at close-range (for example) with the background effectively blurry & out-of-focus, and then take another picture of something in the distance with the bird now blurred and out-of-focus? This camera offers a SPOT focus mode that would allow you to decide where the camera is going to focus. If you are interested in more manual controls I highly suggest looking at the EPL-1 camera. This will offer more control over all camera functions including focus.

There are also options to focus on an object with the background effectively blurry & out-of-focus, and then take another picture of something in the distance with the front object now blurred and out-of-focus.
