Hello Tombc, For the TV's remote to control the receiver’s volume you would have to turn on the HDMI CEC within the receiver’s menu. You would do the same within the tv’s menu by turning on the HDMI CEC for the receiver and the tv to communicate. For more information, you can check page 33 of the TXSR494 manual. Thank you Onkyo
