• Hello DH, Straight out of the box, you can cook pizzas in the Ooni Karu 12 using wood and/or charcoal. If you'd like to use propane, this gas burner is an attachment that you can switch on and off the oven for convenience. Happy cooking!

• No. Karu 12 can burn wood or charcoal as well so you don't need the gas burner. Gas burner is way more convenient though. It heats up faster and you don't have to actively manage the fire. Gas burner would be really useful if you're making 4 or more pizzas in one sitting.
