“How can you tell if you have an ipod is 5th or 6th generation, etc. Just picked up a used one from a friend, never asked what gen it was so not sure of what case I need to get.”

Check this website: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/ipod/ipod-faq/differences-between-ipod-touch-5th-gen-6th-gen.html. Basically, the design of the back of the iPod will indicate which generation it is.

I am not sure, but I would take it to an Apple Store, i'm sure they know a way to identify which gen it is. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Call Apple and have them look up the Model and serial number and they should be able to tell you.

There is a way to tell but its been along time since I found it. Its under the settings icon. If you have problems call apple. That's who helped me find it the first time.

You can look for the model number in the settings of the device and then ask here which generation that model number is.
