A phone jack is only needed for the base. The handsets just need electrical outlet. I keep my handsets on the chargers all the time but you don’t have to. Just remember to charge them. As far as range, I can go outside and they still work. I haven’t wandered too far from the house but they work on our porch or in the driveway. You may want to purchase a longer handset cord for the base phone. The one supplied is very short!
