You can use 2 lines at once: either two cell phones at once or one cell phone and the landline. The base unit has a speaker, but it is only for listening to the talking caller id and listening to the answering machine. You can't use it for hands free conversation. Each HANDSET does have a built in speaker that can be used to talk hands free, and the speaker on each handset can also be used to screen landline calls that go to the base answering machine. (Cell calls are not answered by the answering machine, those calls will transfer to whatever voicemail you have set up through your cellular carrier.) I hope that helps.
