• Yes, the answering system can be set to off so it will not activate if you don't pick up a call.

• Hello Carrie! You can turn off the built-in answering machine by pressing the ANSWER ON/OFF on the main base unit. When you hear "Answer off", the feature is disabled and you can continue using the voicemail service without any interference from the phone system. - S
