Yes, it does have any option and port for using preground, but we definitely prefer using whole beans and letting it grind them up each day making our coffee fresher tasting. Seriously, there's no more effort on your part by using whole beans. Just pour the beans in the tray and let the machine do its job. Otherwise, I believe you have to make sure to put the exact amount of grounds in at the correct timing. I realized the morning of first use that I bought grounds instead of whole beans. So, I was trying to follow the tiny infographic and was not fully attentive. I made an absolute mess that had to be cleaned up on the inside of the machine because I was sleepy, grouchy, impatient, and jonesing for a cappuccino. I'm not very cognizant when I wake in the mornings. I'm a "But first coffee" kind of person. But, you do you. Fix and drink your coffee however you prefer.
