Please try again later.The Hue Hub uses a wired Ethernet connection to your network -- your network does not need to be wireless or even routed as you can set a static IP on the Hue Hub. An internet connection is required for remote / out of home control and as a practical matter WiFi is of course necessary unless you use a desktop app like HueDynamic for lighting control. The bulbs / strips / sensors communicate with the hub via the ZigBee protocol, which smartthings wink and others also use.

Please try again later.The lights themselves just need power, but you do need a wired network connection in your house for the Hue hub to plug into, which is required to control the lights. I believe the lights communicate to the Hue hub via the Zigbee protocol. This starter kit comes with the older version of the Hue hub, which is fine for most people unless you want to use it with Apple's HomeKit functionality.

Please try again later.No, they operate through a WiFi connection and though I've never programmed it without an internet connection, I believe that they can be operated with a WiFi system that is not itself connected to the web-- you just wouldn't be able to sync to multiple devices since that is a function of comminicating with the Philips Meet Hue website that then syncs to your devices from that website.
