“Does this model change color to match the tv screen in real time or is it independent of what is happening on the tv screen?”

You will need to purchase Hue Sync if you want it to match TV screen. The picture shown has three Play (one on each side and one at bottom of TV along with Gradient Light Strip and Sync module. I would upload movie but does not support. It works fantastic and worth the money IMHO.

You would need the hue sync box for this to dynamically change with the tv. So yes, it will change immediately to match the tv, but only if you have the hue sync box.
