That is because these bulbs do not connect to your wifi network. The bulbs can either connect via Bluetooth or Zigbee. WIth this kit, you connect the bridge to your local network with a wired connection. Then, the bulbs will connect to the bridge (and each other) via Zigbee, which is like their own little mesh network. Only the bridge is on your network. If you just had the bulbs, you could still connect via Bluetooth which allows you to control them from a phone app or from Bluetooth enabled devices like an Amazon Echo, but with more limited functions.
