You could still turn the light off with the switch, but could not turn them back on through app or voice comands without flipping the switch on again. With the switch on, you can turn lights on and off through app or voice commands (using connected smart device such as Amazon Echo with Alexa). These lights may need to connect through the Phillips Hue hub (sold separately or inside a starter kit) depending on your set up or other devices; these are additional bulbs.
