It automatically expands or condenses the effect. It always knows the number of LEDs on the strip and just maps the gradient to that length. Additionally: For the sync box/app, it always splits into 3 equal sections, no matter how it’s cut or extended For the “candle” effect, the little candle sections are a fixed length apart, so how many you get will depend on the total length of the strip
