- Answer The splatter screen! You can cook wet batter or other items that would normally splatter up onto the coils and cause the machine to smoke, as well as shake fries or whatever without them coming over the top. In addition, the bottom is stiffer and pops out for much easier cleaning. Personally, I wish the unit had come with this one,
