“This TV seems to have some sort of auto brightness control. The brightness lowers when on a dark image. I don't like this and don't see an option to turn it off. How do I turn this function off?”

Go into the settings menu. Then go to picture and change to Vivid. This will solve your issue and the picture will be awesome.
