When you plug something into the headphone jack, the built-in speakers are disconnected; there's no way around this. However, if you connect through the Digital Output -- you'd have to convert it to drive headphones -- you can turn off the built-in speakers in the Settings. (Note that the Mute button turns off the audio to all sources.)
