If you have a cable box, coax goes in there, then if there's an HDMI output on the cable box (very likely) that goes to tv for best picture and results imho. Doing that as opposed to cable in from cable box to tv solved formatting issues automatically for me.

The Cable TV programming usually comes in through the antenna coax port and requires a cable box connected via HDMI to display the channels. But every cable TV has different functioning.
