With a 5.1 receiver you would just use this speaker as a typical surround speaker, this speaker does have a separate input on the back for the up-firing Atmos driver, but you would not use it like that for a 5.1 system - the inputs on the back can stay bridged together for a 5.1 system (the bridge is just a metal bar on the back that connects the separate inputs together) - but you would be ready to upgrade later with an Atmos receiver, then you would un-bridge the connections and feed them separately!

The lower to drive the normal set of speaker drivers and the upper for ATMOS feature or high settings if you have the additional speaker inputs on your receiver. I have a 9.2 Pioneer Elite receiver which has the additional speaker inputs. My configuration is 7.2.4 = 7 speakers + 2 sub woofers + 4 top firing speakers ( 2 front + 2 sides ). The newer pioneer elite receivers have ATMOS built in. Good luck! Hope this helps. Enjoy the sound.

They are excellent speakers to say the least and would sound good as long as they're not too underpowered. However with a 5.1 receiver, you may benefit more from the traditional 5.1 speaker set up.
