They have two separate connections top and bottom, you could use the top speakers as a presences speakers if your AV receiver has the outputs but for stereo or two channel operation you should only use the lowers speakers which are directed to the listening area.

In a typical Book shelf speaker the Tweeter handles the high frequency sound and the Mid range the bottom speaker handles the rest. The name tweeter Tweet like a bird High Frequency sound small speaker Mid range Human voice range Larger speaker Woofer Largest speaker lowest frequency good one should make your floor rumble when watching a movie or make you feel and hear the bass note on your chest without being distorted ( another speaker you will need to get the full affect of a movie) So to answer the question the whole speaker works hooked up to a Stereo system or a 7.1. You'll just get stereo unless you hook up more speakers. With Atmos you just need more speakers than a 7.1 system. I think it has a height channel added so its more like a 9.1 or 9.2 (9 speakers plus the woofer/woofers)
