“I will be installing it in a 2009 Tacoma that has a back up camera already installed. When using it would the camera automatically activate and display as soon as I put it in reverse or would I need to tap an icon on the screen to activate the camera?”

If properly installed, when you go into reverse, the radio will automatically switch to the reverse camera input. It will display the video from the camera at that time.
