how many USB ports do you need for this, 1 or 2? null

When run off my MacBook Pro, it only needs one.

2 USB 2.0 ports or 1 usb 3.0 port. The second 2.0 port is for power only, so you can plug the connector to any USB charger.

Preferably two, but I can use it on my VAIO Z laptop using only one.

Comes with a Y USB connector. I can use only one with USB3 with MacBook Pro.

It depends: USB 3.0 can supply more power than USB 2.0. So it only requires 1 USB 3.0 port, but it can also be used by plugging in to 2 USB 2.0 ports. (At the slower speed, of course.)

Only 1 Port needed. I use another cable with only 1 USB end and it works perfectly on the low-powered new 12" MacBook

Just need one usb 3.0 port for this burner.

If you do not use an external power source then you use 2 USB ports with the supplied cable.
