“I thought I had the correct usb cable for this.Bought it 2 years ago to go with my then-new MacBook Pro and barely used it. Today, I cannot find any cable that resembles the one necessary for it's weird port.Is it proprietary? How can I get another?”

• This is called a USB 3.0 micro-b. You'll just have to find one with that end and 2 standard USB ends. If you use just a 1 to 1 you'll need a DC power adapter.
