Yes, you can. However, you cannot use apps built into your TV and hear that through your receiver. You'd plug your cable box / Blu-Ray Player / Fire Stick / Chromecast / Apple TV etc., into the receiver and would switch sources that way. You'd run an HDMI out from the "OUT/ARC" port to the TV's HDMI 1 in. As for your older TV, I recommend the Sony Full Array models to replace your outdated Samsung. Great value, great picture.
