You can do it either way. I had my laptop for weeks until I got around to my install. When you boot it up (after the RAM is installed) the computer will notice that you have new memory. Just answer a few questions and game on!

You do not have to do anything but insert your ram there is no need to do anything else, the computer will auto configure the ram....
