• BOTH SPEAKERS MUST BE PLUGGED INTO AN OUTLET.

• Yes it needs to be plugged in. I tried optical to the TV; it works but in my case Sony XBR 900E HDMI to HDMI (ARC) works the best. Very impressive little guy. Don't expect anything that blow you away, but much better than TV speakers.
