“The instructions read when using optical to use both the HDMI and optical together. I'm out of HDMI ports so have it just connected via the optical to a TCL Roku, Turned off the TV Speakers, and it seems fine... whats the reasoning behind both?”

The HDMI ARC cable is a communication wire between the 2 devices. From the TV to the soundbar, turning on the TV should turn on the soundbar. From the soundbar to the TV, on certain TVs, such as Samsung, adjusting the soundbar volume has a graphical display on the TV screen of the volume level. It is a neat feature but not necessary.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I only have it hooked up with the optical and it works great. No idea why you would have to have both hooked up. Just make sure you hit the input button so it finds the optical input.
