9 sprinklers or zones? If you are talking zones, then yes the 16 zone will work and you will have 7 zones left to control for future expansion.

Yes, the 16 is for up to 16 zones. You don’t have to use all 16.

Yes, I have a 10 zone system and this controller works great. You can activate as many zones as you wish, up to 16 of course.

The 16 has more than enough slots to control 9 sprinklers, and you don't have to have something connected to every slot.

If those 9 sprinklers are on 9 different valves (i.e., if you can control them all independently) then you would need the 16, as the smaller 8 model would not have enough connections for all 9. However, if any of those sprinklers are controlled together by one valve, you should only need the smaller model for 8 or fewer valves.
