• The microphone button on the USB option does not have to be held down just pressed once and is not directly connected to the headset but there is another mute switch directly connected to the headset

• the mic button is a mute button when you click it turns red when it’s muted

• No you do not need to hold it, the three buttons are volume up, volume down, and mute, as well as some extra stuff(bass control, etc) on the side of the box. And yes this connects to the headset, the headset plugs directly into it allowing you to use the USB connector.
