“Have there been any reports of sound quality on the PS4 being very low?”

• It may be due to PS4 updates or other issues. I have mine plugged directly into a port but I do suspect that plugging it into a USB hub could degrade performance, because it'll put less power and/or speed through to the headset base. For regular browsing on PC or PS4, the 7.1 feature is not really useful, but it does make a huge difference in game. However sound quality overall has been superb for me
