It does receive hd signal but you have to have an HD tv.

The cable that the antenna uses provides you with the HD picture. All broadcasting channels are required to provide HD programming for free even without the HDMI cables.

The antenna comes with the connector cable (which you call an old fashioned) that is enough for HD reception. You have to find the best orientation of the antenna to get the best picture quality.
