“Is the sd card the only means of saving the video files? Is there other software that stores the files for later viewing? I would want to come back to particular times of the day without scrolling through gigs of files to find a certain recording.”

Hello! The only way for the system to store video files will be through the microSD card. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to store videos through another means.
