Hi Adam, Please note the RIG 400HS is not a headset sold at Best Buy. But there are a few things you can check that are universal for all RIG headset, and gaming headsets in general. First, check the microphone settings in your console audio settings and make sure the microphone audio is set to the proper level. Then, make sure your headset is plugged all the way into your controller, and make sure microphone is firmly inserted into the port on the headset earcup. You can also check the mic by plugging into another 3.5mm audio source other than your controller, or into another controller, to make sure there isn't a controller issue. If you are plugging into a PC and it has separate audio ports for speaker and microphone, you will need to purchase a 3.5mm 4-pole splitter separately. If your mic is still not working after all of that, contact your gift giver as the prouduct is likely within retail return policy if purchased new.
